Of all patients hospitalized at Chiba University Hospital during a year period, 10.9% had infections that were confirmed bacteriologically. Skin, subcutaneous, and deep tissue infections (242 cases) occurred most frequently, followed by urinary tract infections (234 cases), biliary tract infections (73 cases), peritoneal and pleural infections (41 cases), and bacteremia (33 cases), in that order. These infections were classified according to clinical service and causative organisms.
Sixty five to 85% of allover organisms isolated from the infections were gram-negative bacilli, and they were mostly isolated in mixture. As for the species, E. coli, and Klebsiella were most prevalent.
Antibacterial susceptibility testing on E. coli, Klebsiella, Indol negative and positive Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa revealed the highest percentage of susceptibility to gentamicin, and moderate degree of sensitivity to nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, kanamycin, cephalosporins, broad spectrum penicillins and streptomycin. The highest percentage of resistance to chrolamphenicol and tetracycline was recognized.
