One week after the Tohoku district off the Pacific Ocean earthquake on March 11
th, in 2011, two types of the guidelines were established and released on the homepage of Japan Geriatric Society: one was for medical care providers, while another was for non-medical care providers. Twenty thousands of booklets for non-medical care providers were sent immediately through members of the Japan Geriatrics Society and Japan Medical Association Team (JMAT) to the evacuation centers, which were located at Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures. This aim was to reduce morbidity and mortality of the disaster-related illnesses among elderly evacuees, especially within 3 weeks after the disaster.
