1. In determining vitamin A in feces by weakly activated alumina chromatography, it can sometimes occur, that a pigment appears not only in a petroleum benzine (PB) fraction but also in a 1.25% acetone-PB fraction. In such a case, 0.5% acetone-PB is preferable for eluting vitamin A. 2. In cases, where relatively much carotene, cryptoxanthin or lycopene is present in feces, vitamin A can appear in the PB-fraction. In this case, a complete separation of vitamin A from carotenoids is difficult to attain. 3. The Carr-Price values of carotenoids are relatively so low that the correction due to carotenoids is, in general, scarcely necessary. 4. In cases, where a significant yellow color appears in the PB-fraction, the entire eluate including the PB as well as acetone- PB fraction are collected, evaporated and determined for vitamin A. The correction due to carotenoids is practically unnecessary.

A Japanese female adult being used as a test subject, the absorption of carotene was tested, using pure carotene preparation as well as various foodstuffs containing carotene under various conditios with or without test substances. The absorption of pure β-carotene was found to be about 60%, carrot under an ordinary cooking condition 21%, pumpkin 35-53% and spinach 33-35%. With the addition of margarine or olive oil the absorption rose some what but not markedly. The addition of tocopherol or cyanocobalamin promoted the absorption to some extent, but not significantly. The carotene in algae prepartion was about 8% and that of fresh shellfish scarcely absorbed.

The physical and chemical properties of the readily soluble form (RS) and standard soluble form (SS) of crystalline riboflavin which have been available from the Commercial Solvents Corp. were examined and compared with each other. Both crystals differed in the physical characteristics such as powdered x ray diffraction pattern, crystalline form under microscope, melting point and solubility in water. Any essential differences between the solutions of the two forms, however, were observed neither in the absorption spectra and the Rf values with various developing solvents, nor in the relationships between fluorescence intensity and pH and between fluorescence intensity and concentration of riboflavin. Also, the photolysis and the periodic acid oxidation gave respectively the nearly equal results for the two forms. Although the melting points of RS and SS were different, acetylated products from them had the same melting points. From the results above described, it might be confirmed that RS and SS are dimorphous.

Electronmicroscopic observations on thiamine rich yeast were made for the purpose of determining the location of thiamine in yeast cells. Thiamine crystal could be perceived neither electronmicroscopically nor by Debye-Scherrer's method on the cell surface, but the electron was permeated partially in the cell and some clear stripes were visible on its surface. The more thiamine is accumulated, the clearer the stripes become. It is supposed that since the majority of thiamine is on the cell wall, the difference of osmotic pressure due to drying causes plasmolysis, forming the stripes.

Colloidal materials such as mannan. Na-alginate, pectin and agar were confirmed to be able to adsorb thiamine. This fact suggests that polysaccharides of which yeast cell consists, have something to do with the accumulation of thiamine in yeast cells. It was also observed that thiamine was adsorbed on glass powder and that the optimum pH for the adsorption was 4-5.

Poliomyelitis patients with paralysis in one limb were treated by the method of intraspinal injection of 1.0mg acetylcholine plus 5.0mg thiamine. The capillary resistance in the afflicted limb and the corresponding unafflicted limb was measured by the Borbely method 5-30 minutes after the injection. A marked reduction in capillary resistance was observed in both paralyzed and non-paralyzed limbs compared to the preinjection values.

The urea content of the cerebrospinal fluid of poliomyelitis patients was measured. It was found to be reduced compared with the findings in healthy individuals. Following a treatment, there was a sharp rise in the urea level.

The chlorine content of the cerebrospinal fluid was measured in 106 cases of poliomyelitis. The chlorine level within one month after the onset of poliomyelitis is markedly higher compared with that in the healthy individual. The chlorine content in old cases differs little from that in the normal child. A rapid reduction in the chlorine content takes place following a treatment with the glutamylcholine-vitamin B_1 intraspinal injection method. The reduction is parallel with the recovery so that the greater the speed of recovery, the sharper is the reduction curve.

The effect of various amino acids on the acetylation of choline was studied. Glutamic acid, methionine and alanine were found to be related to the acetylation. Of the three, glutamic acid had the strongest action. There was no collaborative action between gluamic acid, methionine and alanine.

The physiological action of glutamylcholine, synthesized by Nishizawa as a therapeutic agent for poliomyelitis, was studied. The action of glutamylcholine was compared with that of acetylcholine. In experiments with the Magnus method, (using rat intestine, the effect of the former was only 1/200 of that of the latter, and it was 1/10 in the effect on the blood pressure when injected intravenously. When injected intrathecally in rabbits and the bood pressure measured, glutamylcholine not only showed the same effect as acetylcholine, but the duration of the effect was several times longer. There is no irritating effect when injected intraspinally in human subjects. Injection of more than 30mg/kg intravenously in guinea pigs results in death but rabbits do not die with this dosage.

This paper deals with the role of some phosphates such as glucose-1-phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate and β-glycerophosphate in the formation of riboflavin by Escherichia coli communior. The effect of each phosphate was examined in adding to the basal medium in the amount of 1/3000 mole or 200mg per ml in place of g1ucose. The results obtained were as follows : (1) Contrary to expectation, each compound above mentioned was less effective than glucose in the biosynthesis of riboflavin. The highest formation of the vitamin was observed in the addition of glucose-1-phosphate of the three compounds and the least in β-glycerophosphate. (2) It was suggested that some of the energy produced in glycolysis might be utilized for the biosynthesis of riboflavin.
