As the third report of the nutritional physiology of mint plant, the authers intended to study the relation of the hydrogen ion concentration of the nutrient medium to the growth of mint plant, especially regarding to the content and character of essential oil, by means of water culture.

Observation of the profiles and chemical analysis were made on the red upland soils of Central Mountaines at Tamazato district in Karenko-cho. The soils are derived from crystalline schists. The profile consists of the following horizons : (A) the surface soil (15cm.) deep; clay rich in humus (3.5) and with dark reddish brown colour, (B_1)(B_2) the subsoils; hard nutty structure poor in humus (1.9-1.6 %) and with brick or reddish colour. (B_2) horizon : with more motherrocks and more reddish than (B_1) horizon, and the boundary of the two horizons is indistinct. The fertility of these soils is poor, especially in the content of K_2O, and P_2O_5 nutrients; and after two or three cane croppings, the productivity decreases suddenly. When field is wet after rain, it becomes persistent, and when it is dried up, it becomes too hard to plow and forms deep crackes. The climate of this district resembles to the savanna. (22.4℃ of the average annual temperature and 1.9962. mm. of the total annual precipitation) The results of chemical analysis are shown as follows. (1) HCl soluble SiO_2,Al_2O_3 content, their molecular ratios, pH and total exchange acidity by DAIKUBARA'S method are shown in the following table. (in original soil)[table](3) free Fe_2O_3 by HARADA'S method and free Al_2O_3 by STEBUTT'S method are as follows.[table]Considering the above tables, the red soil of Eastern Part of Formosa (derived from crystalline schists) seems to be partly podozolized and to belong to lateritic red loam.

SYNOPSIS : The present paper refers to a general description in manufacturing Thomas steel and it's byproduct namely "Thomasphosphate manure". The author describes the following matters; 1) Historical developments of converter steel making. 2) By what means phosphor are added to the Thomas pig iron. 3) Why the Thomas pig iron must have a proper content of Phosphor and a low of silicium. 4) What is the metallurgical refining in converter dealing with the formation of Thomas slag. 5) Why the Thomas slag. which will be convented to the phosphate manure, must have a proper content of silica in order to increase solubility of phosphates in a solution of 2% citric acid. And some another influences on a solubility of phosphates in slag. 6) How to grind and treat Thomas slag to make the phosphate manure. 7) What is the Thomasphosphate manure, especially it's chemical and physical properties in compairing with that of Germany and Belgium. Taking consideration of the agricultural precedent in Germany, the author may have privilege of dealing with the necessity for these forthcoming Thomasphosphate manure as a problem, believing that agricultural demands will be supplied with this manure in our country.
