Thick anodized titanium plates with high photocatalytic activity were prepared by 2-step anodization method : first anodization in the bath (H
3PO
4-H
2SO
4-H
2O
2) containing SnO
2 and/or TiO
2 particles; reanodization in the mixture of NH
4HF
2 and H
2O
2. The apparent rate constant (
k), which was evaluated by the photooxidation decomposition of CH
3CHO gas, was drastically improved by the addition of SnO
2 and/or TiO
2 particles. The high
k value was mainly induced by the three things : (1) TiO
2 particles loaded on the film surface; (2) crystal growth of anatase because of a significant change in electrolytic behaviour; (3) acceleration of charge career separation owing to the transfer of a part of photogenerated electrons from TiO
2 to SnO
2 particles in the films.
