This paper proposes an I-O SDA, based on a hybrid rectangular IO model, to estimate the impact of the changes in (1) energy demand structure, (2) non-energy input structure, (3) non-energy product-mix, (4) non-energy substitution, (5) non-energy manufacturing technology, and (6) non-energy final demand on the embodied energy requirements.
Major findings are as follows; The total energy requirement in Japan has increased mainly because of the changes in non-energy substitution and energy demand structure, while the changes in non-energy manufacturing technology, and the non-energy product-mix have reverse effects, that is, saving of energy from the viewpoint of non-energy production technology changes. The effect of the changes in non-energy final demand is twelve times larger than the effect of non-energy production technology changes.
