This study examined the amount of woody residues discharged from sawmills as well as the characteristics of their disposal and utilization through case studies in Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures. The questionnaire revealed the following facts: (1) sawdust accounts for about 20% of log consumption and more than half of the sawdust is for sale, (2) planer and tip dust is discharged less and is mostly incinerated, and (3) the amount of bark is difficult to be measured and a large amount is burnt. In Shizuoka, 70% of sawdust is distributed by sawdust hauliers while in Kanagawa it is sold directly to consumers. The former is characteristic large scale log consumer while the latter is a small scale one. More than half the sawdust in both prefectures is utilized by livestock farmers. In Shizuoka especially, beef breed purchase a large quantity of sawdust. Further study on sawdust demand of livestock farming section is required.
