Abstract
Chronic inflammatory diseases develop anemia of chronic disease (ACD) with specific abnormalities in iron metabolism. Chronic inflammation triggers release of inflammatory cytokines, which stimulate hepcidin expression in the liver. Increased hepcidin production leads to a decrease in serum iron, resulting in anemia. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) promotes chronic inflammation due to osteomyelitis. We report two cases of anemia attributable to MRONJ-induced chronic inflammation. Diagnosis and treatment must focus not only on anemia secondary to poor oral intake, but it is also important to consider ACD in patients with MRONJ.
