Abstract

In the Tokushima urban area, traffic congestion caused by detours is expected to result in significant time loss during major road bridge repairs. The objective of this study is to understand the effect of traffic management measures that combine the dispersion of departure times and lane operations during major repairs of major road bridges. The study estimates the effects of traffic demand dispersion by providing information to passing vehicles in the restricted section to induce them to change their departure time, and of traffic capacity optimization by lane operation in the road section of the surrounding bridges. For this purpose, traffic conditions are estimated using traffic simulation to evaluate the effects of traffic management. The results show that the combination of appropriate time dispersion and lane operations may reduce the time loss at the adjacent bridges.
