Purpose: A comprehensive rehabilitation program aimed at prom oting self-awareness among patients with neurocognitive disorders living at home and their caregivers was developed and evaluated by comparing its effects on patients and caregivers.
Methods: The program combined personal interviews, group sessions, and education by medical practitioners (a nurse, neuropsychiatrist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist). Participants were five pairs of patients with neurocognitive disorders and their caregivers. The program spanned eight sessions. Case-intervention studies were conducted in pairs to a total of 5 groups.
Results: All participants attended the eight sessions. During the intervention period, Traumatic Brain Injury-31 (TBI-31), memory dysfunction, and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) improved, despite no change in Mine-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Improvements in memory and IADL were related to goal achievement and consistency between self-assessment and assessment by others. Moreover, a reduction in caregiver care burden was observed as a secondary effect.
Conclusion: The program promoted self-awareness among nurses while providing mental support, which both enhanced their patients’ capacity to adopt compensation methods and reduced the care burden of caregivers.

Objective: This literature review investigated research trends in Japan and abroad regarding self-care behavior and different measurements. Additionally, we examined potential problems regarding the scales used among patients with chronic kidney disease(CKD), the measuring of CKD properties, as well as the reliability and validity of the different measurements.
Methods: The literature search was conducted online using the PubMed, CINAHL, Central Journal of Medicine Web Edition, and CiNii databases during May 2019. Twenty-nine journal articles that met the inclusion criteria were identified and subsequently examined.
Results: The measurements identified in the literature could be divided into three characteristics: (1) measurements for diabetes patients, (2) measurements for general desirable health behaviors in chronic disease, and (3) measurements for CKD. Eight specific measurements used to assess and treat CKD were identified in this literature review; in addition, out of the eight studies, six used a specific measurement. The studies published in 2018. Two of these identified measurements comprehensively evaluated CKD prevention methods(e.g., diet control). Unfortunately, all identified measurements for CKD provided insufficient information regarding the evaluation of properties of CKD, and only one measurement examined its own structural validity.
Conclusion: Measurements of CKD tend to be specific and comprehensive in evaluating the self-care behavior of patients with chronic kidney disease; however, this study highlights a problem of measurements for CKD in that properties of CKD have been insufficiently examined.
