Abstract
A number of epidemiological studies have shown that supplementation or food fortification with folic acid would reduce the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs). In 2000, Japan Ministry of health, labor and welfare issued the governmental policy of pre- and peri-conceptional folate intake (400ug/day) in women of reproductive age in order to reduce the risk of NTD affected pregnancies. Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have analyses the molecular mechanisms of folate metabolism but the morphologic development of human neural tube is poorly understood. A number of studies analyzing MTHFR variants have resulted in positive associations with increased NTD risk, suggesting that these variants may contribute to the etiology of NTDs. It makes some sense for prospective parents to be tested for MTHFR variants, or for variants of other known folate pathway genes. In addition to the protective effects of Birth Defects, folate is recommended for all generation to promote health care in particulaly to prevent cardiovascular disease
