We employed X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to reveal the hydrogen bonding states of water molecules in the vicinity of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Our measurements demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding states of the water molecules depend on the terminal groups of alkanethiols constituting the SAMs. We discuss the hydrogen bonding states of water molecules in the vicinity of the SAMs.
