In this paper, a centrifugal pump which is designed especially for high consistency paper stock is studied experimentally. it shows that the paper stock of 9.5 per cent consistency (bone-dry) can be handled by this pump with more excellent results than those ever obtained by other similar pumps. Such excellent results seem to depend upon the wide passage of pump impeller and sufficient suction pressure by the large chest with an agitator. This report describes how the characteristics of the pump are influenced by the consistency of paper stock and suction pressure.
The results obtained are mainly as follows :
(1) The efficiency and bead of centrifugal pump with an open impeller increase with paper stock consistency for a limited extent, because the leakage through the running clearance between impeller blades and casing wall becomes negligible at high consistency.
(2) In order to pump up high consistency paper stock, the suction pressure must be increased linearly ith the consistency ranging from per cent to 9.5 per cent.
