Abstract

The evolution of ancient book editions over time is a significant topic in the field of ancient studies. With the advent of digital humanities, the imperative to effectively leverage modern information technology to re-examine and illustrate the edition evolution has become increasingly apparent. Nonetheless, existing research predominantly concentrates on detailed description of specific editions, with less attention given to systematically organizing and presenting the complex evolution processes among editions. Hence, this study endeavors to bridge this gap by establishing a data model based on Linked Open Data (LOD) to represent the evolution of ancient books editions over time with Shishuo Xinyu as a case study. We designed the model with the following two principal components. First, it structures information of each edition and their interrelationships at the metadata level. The structurization of ancient temporal information is also incorporated in to forge the chronological context of the editions. Throughout the modeling process, we utilized the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) is utilized for its adeptness at flexibly depicting complex events. Second, the textual variants within book contents are marked using the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) , showcasing the evolution of editions at the full-text level. The Web Annotation Data Model is also invoked for its comprehensive annotation capabilities.
