Abstract
This paper describes verifications of Chen's approximate solutions for web stiffened sandwich constructions by means of photoelastic experimental study. Also it is concerned with derivations of a developed analysis for web and soft core. Considering the sandwich constructions as a Vierendeel Truss, the developed solution can present the second-order shear modulus μ* determined by measuring local bending effect, which accounts for the transverse shear deformation of the webs and soft core. While retaining the discrete nature of the webs and soft core, the flexural formulus using μ* could be based upon the energy principles of continuum theory due to the replacement by a “smeared-out” homogeneous layer. In addition, the validity of the solution was examined by comparison of the results from rigid frame and truss analysis. The photoelastic experimental results obtained are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. The optimum face thickness and web spacing for sandwich construction with web and soft core were cleared.
