Abstract
Children’s homes (CHs) for children aged from 15 to 20 were established in 1997 as a children's self reliant living assistance service for children. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare promoted the establishment of CHs. In this study, we examine the way of living and environment in today’s CHs. Of the 49 CHs, 11 were newly constructed buildings; many of the homes were enlarged by renovating existing buildings. This study suggests that residential buildings for the average Japanese family can be easily utilized as CHs. As a facility for cultivating the social self-reliance of children, a living room and individual rooms must of course be secured when converting existing houses, but based on the investigations in this research:(1) a cooking space which can be used by multiple people; and (2) storage space suitable for the number of residents of the home can also be regarded as requirements for a home.
