Brief history is presented how "nano-technology" has been adopted as one of the priority R&D area of Japan in the 2nd Science and Technology Basic Plan, mentioning the difference between US and Japan. It is then discussed what should be the aspects of interest in pursuing the research in the field of nano-technology.
