Since 1955, the Asahi Shimbun has been conducting national pre-election polls, evolving from face-to-face interviews to telephone surveys sampled from voter lists and eventually to the current hybrid method combining Random Digit Dialing (RDD) for landlines and cell phones with internet online surveys. This paper traces the history of these methodologies and explains the methodology of RDD and Internet survey showing the challenges for them. It also highlights the signifcance of exit polls, which have been experimentally conducted since the 1990s and have become indispensable for election reporting on television and vote analysis in newspapers.
